At War Within

At War Within is an immersive multi-media installation by artist Massoumeh Jian. It combines large-scale figurative paintings on Mylar, multi-channel video projection, and surround sound. The work explores ideas of gender, culture and religion surrounding the artist’s plight as an Iranian woman.

The installation consists of a series of oil paintings on large sheets of semi-translucent Mylar, each hung on scrolls within a series of freestanding wood frames configured in a large ring. Each painting depicts a life-size self-portrait of the artist. Multiple video loops of explosions are then projected in extreme slow motion onto a selection of the Mylar paintings. Connecting the space is an immersive soundscape originating in part from audio recordings of the artist’s internal blood flow.
